ChatGPT Health Now Open to All Americans: What You Can Do

OpenAI made ChatGPT Health available to all U.S. users aged 18 and older on July 23, 2026. Every logged-in American on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans can now connect their Apple Health data and medical records directly to ChatGPT. The feature first launched in January to a limited group. Now it’s for everyone.

What ChatGPT Health Actually Lets You Do

This is not just a chatbot answering generic health questions.

You can connect real data sources. Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function are all supported for fitness and wellness tracking. For medical records, ChatGPT Health works with Epic, Oracle Health, One Medical, and Function Health, which covers a large portion of hospital systems across the United States.

Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT to explain your lab results, track prescription history, prep questions for your next doctor appointment, or understand medical terminology without opening five browser tabs.

The Numbers Behind This Launch

300 million. That’s how many health-related queries people send to ChatGPT every single week as of July 2026.

When OpenAI first tested this feature in January, that number was 230 million weekly queries. It grew by 70 million in six months. And over 70 percent of those health questions happen during regular conversations, not in a dedicated health tab. Someone meal planning asks about food allergies. Someone tracking workouts asks about recovery time.

That’s exactly why OpenAI moved health context into the main chat window instead of keeping it buried in a separate section.

Which AI Model Powers Your Health Queries

Not all plans get the same experience. That matters here.

Free users get GPT-5.5 Instant. It handles basic health queries well but scores 53.2 percent on completeness in OpenAI’s own HealthBench Professional evaluation.

Paid users on Plus and Pro get GPT-5.6 Sol. That model scores 88.0 percent on the same benchmark. For complex health questions involving multiple conditions, medications, or detailed lab interpretation, that gap is significant.

OpenAI’s teams worked alongside hundreds of practicing physicians to benchmark model performance across real-world medical scenarios before this rollout.

Privacy and Data Protection

Medical data is sensitive. OpenAI addressed this directly.

Health conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. There are additional access controls and audit logging on health data. And OpenAI confirmed that connected health data is not used to train foundation models. Your lab results and Apple Health data stay yours.

The Lawsuit Context No One is Talking About

This rollout happened one day after a Florida-based pastor filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. The lawsuit alleged that ChatGPT gave a near-fatal suggestion telling a user not to consult a doctor.

OpenAI has now faced two lawsuits in the past three months related to dangerous medical advice from ChatGPT. The company’s response was to expand the feature to everyone while simultaneously adding more safeguards and repeating its standard disclaimer.

ChatGPT is not a substitute for professional medical care. OpenAI says this clearly. Verify important health information with a healthcare provider before acting on anything the AI tells you.

What This Means for AI Health Tools

OpenAI is not alone here. Anthropic and Google are both building health-focused AI features. The race to become the default health AI assistant is real.

But ChatGPT has a head start in scale. 300 million weekly health queries is not a pilot program. That’s a platform. And giving those 300 million users access to their actual medical records and Apple Health data changes what those conversations can accomplish.

If you use AI productivity tools to manage your daily workflow, ChatGPT Health is the same idea applied to your personal health management. Less time navigating patient portals. More time understanding what your data actually means.

How to Get Started

Open ChatGPT on web or iOS. Go to your profile settings and look for the Health section. Connect your Apple Health account or medical record provider. Then ask your first health question in the main chat window.

The feature is available now across all plans for U.S. users 18 and older. It is not yet available in Codex. No word yet on international rollout timing.
