OpenAI ChatGPT Health: Big Claims, Real Risks, and What to Know
OpenAI says ChatGPT Health is now available to all U.S. users aged 18 and older. The company also says GPT-5.6 Sol, the model powering paid health queries, outperforms physician-written answers on its own HealthBench benchmark. Both things are true. So is this: OpenAI is rolling out a health AI product while actively defending two lawsuits that allege its chatbot gave users near-fatal and fatal medical advice.
That context matters more than the press release.
What OpenAI Is Actually Claiming
The numbers OpenAI is putting forward are specific and worth looking at directly.
GPT-5.6 Sol scores 88.0 percent on completeness in HealthBench Professional. GPT-5.5 Instant, which free users get, scores 53.2 percent on the same benchmark. OpenAI says both models beat physician-written answers across every category on that evaluation.
The company also says its teams worked alongside hundreds of practicing physicians to build and test the benchmark. That is a meaningful claim. It’s also a claim that OpenAI controls and administers itself, which is worth keeping in mind when reading those numbers.
The Lawsuit Timing Nobody Should Ignore
This launch happened one day after a Florida pastor filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.
The lawsuit alleges ChatGPT gave a near-fatal suggestion telling a user not to consult a doctor. That is not the first case. In May 2026, the family of a 19-year-old who died of a drug overdose filed a civil lawsuit blaming ChatGPT for advising their son to combine Xanax and Kratom. Two lawsuits in three months. Both involving dangerous medical advice from the same product.
OpenAI’s response has been to cite its terms of service, which clearly state that ChatGPT is not intended for diagnosis or treatment of any health condition. And then expand the feature to 300 million users anyway.
What the Feature Actually Does Well
To be fair, the practical use cases for ChatGPT Health are genuinely useful for most people most of the time.
Understanding lab results is confusing. Translating medical jargon from a discharge summary takes time most people don’t have. Prepping questions before a doctor’s appointment is something ChatGPT does well. And if you use Function Health for comprehensive lab testing, connecting those 100 plus biomarkers directly to ChatGPT Health adds a layer of personalization that generic health conversations simply can not match.
These are informational tasks, not diagnostic ones. For that category of use, an AI that pulls context from your actual health records is meaningfully better than searching symptoms on Google.
The Free vs Paid Gap Is Significant Here
This is not a case where free and paid perform similarly.
Free users get GPT-5.5 Instant at 53.2 percent completeness on complex health benchmarks. Paid users get GPT-5.6 Sol at 88.0 percent. That 35 point gap matters more in health contexts than it does when you’re asking ChatGPT to write a marketing email.
A free user asking about a complex drug interaction or interpreting an unusual lab value is getting a model that answers completely less than 55 percent of the time on professional health questions. That is not a small caveat.
Privacy: What OpenAI Actually Commits To
OpenAI made three specific commitments on data privacy for ChatGPT Health.
Connected medical records and Apple Health data are not used to train foundation models. Health conversations that use connected data are also excluded from training. And there is no advertising targeting based on health data.
These are stronger commitments than most consumer apps make. The data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with additional access controls and audit logging beyond what standard ChatGPT conversations receive.
How to Think About This Feature
Use ChatGPT Health the way you’d use a knowledgeable friend who has read a lot of medical literature. Useful for context and background. Not a replacement for a doctor’s judgment.
Connect MyFitnessPal to track your daily nutrition alongside your health conversations, and your AI responses become more personalized to your actual lifestyle. The feature is available now on web and iOS for U.S. users 18 and older across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Open Health from the sidebar in ChatGPT to get started.
