OpenAI Is Building Its Own AI Hardware Family. Here Is the Full Picture.
OpenAI is no longer just a software company. Greg Brockman confirmed on July 29, 2026 that the company is building a “family of devices” for its AI products. The Chip Comes First: Meet Jalapeño

Jalapeño is built specifically for LLM inference, which means running AI models for users rather than training them. That is the compute-intensive work behind every ChatGPT response you get. Right now, OpenAI pays Nvidia for that compute. Jalapeño is the plan to reduce that dependency.
Richard Ho, who leads OpenAI’s hardware program, said the chip was “optimized around the kernels, memory movement, networking, and serving patterns that matter most for frontier AI models.” Early testing shows it runs important workloads close to the hardware’s theoretical limits. A detailed technical report with benchmark numbers is due in the coming months.
The Deployment Timeline
Initial Jalapeño deployment is targeted for late 2026. That means small prototype rollouts at data centers, not full-scale production. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan told CNBC the real ramp starts in 2027, with full deployment in the first half of 2028.
Microsoft is the primary deployment partner. Reports indicate Broadcom required Microsoft to guarantee it will purchase 40% of the first production run. The full buildout is planned to reach 10 gigawatts of capacity by the end of 2029.
OpenAI and Broadcom are treating Jalapeño as the first chip in a multi-generation platform. This is not a one-time project. It is a roadmap.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan put the demand in plain terms on CNBC. “The compute demand from our customers is simply insatiable. It’s just much more than we can address. And this is not just ’26, not ’27, we’re seeing that same and even elevated demand in ’28 as well.”
The Devices: What Brockman Actually Confirmed

Apple’s Lawsuit: What It Actually Says
Apple filed suit in federal court in Northern California on July 10, 2026. The defendants are OpenAI, hardware chief Tang Tan, former Apple engineer Chang Liu, and io Products.
Apple’s core accusation is a “pattern of theft.” The complaint claims OpenAI recruiters encouraged prospective hires to bring “actual parts” from Apple for show and tell. Why This Matters for Everyone Using AI Tools
OpenAI currently cannot get compute fast enough. Brockman said that directly. Every model upgrade, every new feature in ChatGPT, every agent-based product depends on having enough inference capacity to serve hundreds of millions of users.
