ChatGPT Desktop Gets GPT Voice Mode: Talk Your Way Through Work
OpenAI rolled out GPT Voice mode to the ChatGPT desktop app on July 23, 2026. The update brings the same GPT-Live voice technology that arrived on mobile earlier this month to both macOS and Windows. You can now talk to complete tasks, run agents, and steer ongoing work, all without touching your keyboard.
What GPT Voice Actually Does on Desktop
This isn’t just a voice-to-text upgrade. That matters.
GPT-Live lets you start a new chat or task in voice mode and then direct ChatGPT to check, start, or steer work happening in other threads inside the app. Think of it as a voice controller for everything ChatGPT is running at once.
The official release notes from OpenAI confirm it works across Chat, Work, and Codex tabs inside the desktop app. So if you have an agent running in Codex and a research thread open in Work, you can manage both with your voice at the same time.
That’s a meaningful shift from how voice modes have worked before.
Mac Users Got One Extra Feature
Windows gets GPT Voice. Mac gets GPT Voice plus Appshots.
Appshots is a Mac-exclusive feature that was introduced back in May 2026. When you use ChatGPT Voice on macOS, it can reference the active window currently in focus on your screen. That means if you’re working in a spreadsheet or a code editor, ChatGPT can see what you’re looking at and give you more relevant responses without you describing it manually.
I’ve tested Appshots in earlier builds and the context awareness it adds is genuinely useful. It removes a layer of friction that most people don’t realize is slowing them down.
Which Plans Get Access
Not everyone gets GPT Voice on day one.
OpenAI confirmed the feature is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans on desktop. Free users are not included in this rollout.
The new voice mode also connects with ChatGPT’s Remote feature on iOS, which lets you control the desktop app from your phone. And it works with Computer Use, local files, and ChatGPT plugins, making it a more complete hands-free experience than anything OpenAI has offered before on desktop.
What Else Changed in This Update
The same update also improved how local project folders work inside the desktop app.
You can now add multiple related folders to a single project. From the project menu, you select Edit Project to add folders and choose one as the primary. New chats, Git operations, and automatic discovery of AGENTS.md files and config settings all default to the primary folder. The secondary folders stay available for file search, reading, and editing.
It’s a practical improvement for anyone running large codebases or multi-repo projects inside ChatGPT Work or Codex.
Why This Update Matters
Voice mode was actually removed from the old Mac app back in December 2025. Mac users went months without it while iPhone and iPad users got the newer GPT-Live version.
Today’s update closes that gap entirely. And it goes further. The Mac now has a voice mode that’s more capable than what was removed, with agent coordination built in from the start.
OpenAI’s own Codex engineer Guinness Chen said he has been using it for weeks and never wants to interact with AI any other way again. That kind of internal enthusiasm usually signals something that actually works, not just a feature built for a press release.
What This Means for ChatGPT Users
If you’re on a paid ChatGPT plan and you use the desktop app regularly, update it now and try voice mode today. The combination of GPT-Live, Appshots on Mac, and multi-agent coordination is the most functional voice interface OpenAI has shipped to desktop so far.
