ChatGPT Now Shows Yelp Reviews: What the OpenAI Deal Actually Means

Yelp signed a data licensing agreement with OpenAI on July 23, 2026. ChatGPT can now pull Yelp reviews, ratings, photos, and business details directly into its responses when users ask about local businesses. This is not a rumor. Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman confirmed it to Axios exclusively.

What Yelp Is Actually Giving OpenAI

The numbers are large.

Yelp handed OpenAI access to 330 million cumulative user-generated reviews and more than 8 million business listings. That database covers restaurants, salons, contractors, healthcare providers, and practically every category of local business you can think of.

ChatGPT will now surface those reviews, ratings, and photos when users ask local questions. And Yelp’s branding and links will appear alongside the content, though OpenAI controls how exactly that experience looks inside the chat interface.

The Request a Quote Feature Is Coming Too

This part gets interesting for local businesses.

Yelp plans to bring its “Request a Quote” feature into ChatGPT. That means a user asking for a plumber recommendation will eventually be able to request a quote from a local service provider without ever leaving the ChatGPT interface.

That’s a real shift in how people will discover and contact local businesses. No website visit required. No Google search. Just a chat. If you run a local business and use AI tools for business, this integration is worth watching closely.

Why Yelp Chose to Partner Instead of Compete

Yelp already licenses its data to Apple Maps and Yahoo. The OpenAI deal is the same playbook applied to a new distribution channel.

Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman put it plainly. He said Yelp sees value in distributing its content beyond its own properties when it benefits consumers. In other words, Yelp is betting that its 20-plus years of human-written reviews become more valuable as AI-generated content floods the internet, not less.

It’s a smart read. Real reviews from real people are exactly what AI systems need to give trustworthy local recommendations.

What This Means for Local Search

This deal is an acknowledgment of something the industry has been slow to say out loud. Chatbots are taking market share from traditional search for everyday queries.

People already ask ChatGPT where to eat, which contractor to hire, and what service provider to call. Until now, ChatGPT’s answers on local topics were limited by its training data. Yelp’s real-time review database changes that significantly.

Reddit took a similar approach with its own OpenAI licensing deal. Both companies made the same calculation. Getting your data inside ChatGPT is better than watching ChatGPT answer questions without it. You can explore more AI tools for marketing that are adapting to this new search reality.

One Thing Worth Watching

Yelp’s stock rose briefly on the news and then reversed, extending a recent losing streak.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. And the agreement does not prevent Yelp from making similar deals with Google, Microsoft, or any other AI company. So this is a distribution play, not an exclusive relationship.

For Yelp, the risk is that ChatGPT shows users Yelp’s review content without actually sending meaningful traffic back to Yelp.com. The branded links are supposed to address that. Whether they actually drive clicks at scale is something we’ll only know in a few months.

What ChatGPT Users Should Know

If you ask ChatGPT about a local restaurant, contractor, or service provider, you’ll start seeing Yelp reviews and ratings appearing in responses. That’s a meaningful upgrade in accuracy and detail compared to what ChatGPT could offer before this deal.

When the Request a Quote integration goes live, you’ll be able to contact local businesses directly from inside a ChatGPT conversation. That’s genuinely useful, not just a headline feature.

Per Axios, Yelp’s branding and links will appear when OpenAI uses its content, though OpenAI controls the design of that experience.
